I had intended to write about something completely different today. I was going to write about a play that I saw this afternoon called The Lonesome West by Martin McDonagh. I wanted to see it because it got pretty good reviews and because it was a very early role for Andrew Scott. He played a priest in it and mentioned it in an interview some time afterward. I thought perhaps it might prove illuminating to me as part of the Scott oeuvre. It might have except I never made it to the show. It was at a theater here in Chicago that I’d never been to before and turned out to be more of a distance than I counted on, and thanks to the usual annoying traffic I ended up just a wee bit late for the curtain. So even though I’d already paid for the ticket I just couldn’t see clattering my way to my seat while the show was on. I couldn’t do that to the actors. It was not the fanciest theater I’ve ever seen judging from the outside. It’s one thing to arrive late to a movie or a play in a large auditorium, but this was a smallish equity theater I think, never actually saw it obviously, so that just wouldn’t have worked. And today was the last performance, so that’s that. Oh well.

I decided instead to mention a short film Andrew is in right now called Silent Things. It won an award today at the International Film Festival Rotterdam as a New Arrival. Click on the link above and scroll down to see the entire film. I saw it somewhere online that worked better, but I can’t remember where at the moment.
